Archie Turnbull retired in 2013 after some 30 years of directing and managing international medical organisations: The International Union Against Cancer (UICC) 1985 – 1999 and the European Respiratory Society (ERS) 2000 – 2007 and 2010 – 2013. Previously he worked in banking and investment fund management before moving to development aid programmes and the field of micro lending, running a fund operating in over 60 countries.
He has been involved in Tobacco Control at the European level since 1990, setting up UICC office in Brussels and employing one of the first lobbyists. During his period as director, both UICC and ERS expanded their public health related advocacy, particularly in Tobacco Control and ERS was one of the founders of SFP. He was president of EPHA for four years and is now the EPHA Treasurer.
