New Webinar: Who Gets a Seat at the Table? Examining Tobacco Industry Influence and Article 5.3 ahead of the EU Tobacco Legislation Revision
Friday, 16 October 2026
As the European Commission prepares its proposal for the revision of the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) and Tobacco Advertising Directive (TAD), expected in December 2026, tobacco and nicotine industry engagement with EU policymakers is intensifying.
This makes it particularly important to examine the extent of this engagement, its implications for EU tobacco control policymaking, and the safeguards needed to protect public health interests.
Organised by Smoke Free Partnership, this webinar will present new evidence from SFP’s monitoring of tobacco industry meetings with Members of the European Parliament and explore the role of Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in protecting public health policies from undue industry influence.
The discussion will also examine national experiences in implementing Article 5.3, drawing on perspectives from the Netherlands and France to highlight approaches to transparency, accountability and the practical implementation of safeguards. Speakers will include representatives of the WHO FCTC Secretariat, the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control, the Dutch Ministry of Health and France’s Comité national contre le tabagisme (CNCT).
As the revision of EU tobacco legislation approaches, the webinar will provide an opportunity to discuss how the effective implementation of Article 5.3 and robust transparency measures can help safeguard public health policymaking from undue tobacco industry influence.
