SFP supports joint letter to the UN SG following a note on the role of the tobacco industry in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
Brussels, 22 July: SFP expresses its support for the letter sent on behalf of Action on Smoking & Health (ASH US), Framework Convention Alliance, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and STOP (Stopping Tobacco Organizations and Products) to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
The letter comes in response to a note sent to Secretary General Gutierres on “more nuanced” relationship between the tobacco industry and the UN system, from the outgoing Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), Michael Møller. The narrative in the note is threatening progress on the Sustainable Development Goals but is also in conflict with international law (specifically Art. 5.3 of the WHO FCTC). You can find the letter here.
