20 June 2017: High level conference on tobacco and research

On 20 June 2017 SFP organised a high level conference on tobacco and research, bringing together leading academics, researchers, and policy makers in research to address the gaps in tobacco control policy research in Europe, explain the need for synergistic relationships between research and policy, and discuss how partnerships in tobacco control research could be developed in Europe and other parts of the world

SFP Coalition Meeting 2017

High Level Conference on Illicit Trade of Tobacco Products

Following the very successful Leuven and Bratislava Conferences, SFP is organising a High Level Conference on illicit tobacco trade in Brussels. The Conference will discuss the latest state of affairs regarding the adoption of the standards for an EU tracking and tracing system for tobacco products and how the future of the EU system will have a global impact; its impact on the ratification of the Illicit Trade Protocol and promote international cooperation. The conference will bring together eminent guests from the World Bank, the FCTC Secretariat, the European Commission, ministries of health and customs authorities from the Member States, Members of the European Parliament, international tobacco control experts and NGOS.

The overall objective of the high level conference is to establish a strong science base for tobacco-control policy and interventions in order to improve societal understanding of the effects of tobacco on health and to best direct resources towards its control. In this context, we will call on DG Research & Innovation to create a budget line within the Horizon 2020 for tobacco control and applied research based on FCTC Article 20 together with a committee on Tobacco and applied research within Horizon 2020. The conference will be attended by policy makers from DG Research & Innovation, DG DEVCO, DG SANTE as well as policy makers responsible for research at national level as well as prominent researchers in tobacco control. 

World No Tobacco Day 2017 policy debate on "Tobacco: A Threat to Development"

On World No Tobacco Day 31 May 2017, SFP along with several public health organisations will organise a policy debate on this year's WNTD theme, "Tobacco: a threat to Development", hosted by Linda McAvan MEP, Chair of the European Parliament Development Committee. 

Join us with high level speakers including Health Commissioner Andriukaitis and representatives of the WHO, the World Bank and international tobacco control advocates to discuss the importance of tobacco control to sustainable development.

 

Roundtable on Article 20 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC)

12 October 2016. SFP organised a roundtable on Research, Surveillance and Exchange of Information (FCTC Art 20) hosted by MEP Linda McAvan. The overall objective of the roundtable was to raise awareness of and support for Article 20 of the FCTC in order to ensure this important article is no longer overlooked and gets the attention it deserves amongst all policy makers in charge of research within the European Union.

SFP and The Union Capacity Building Seminar on Taxation and Illicit Trade of Tobacco Products

20-21 June 2016. SFP together with the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease,  held a 2-day Capacity Building Seminar that took place in Bratislava. The aim of this seminar was to strengthen the training developed by SFP in previous years in order to effectively support national, European and international policy initiatives in line with Articles 6 (taxation) and 15 (illicit trade) of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) as well as the EU approach with regards to taxation and illicit trade.

World No Tobacco Day cocktail reception: The 2014 Tobacco Products Directive and Plain Packaging Progress in the EU

The 2016 World No Tobacco Day focused on plain packaging falls just a few days after the entry into force of the Tobacco Products Directive, which has greatly contributed to the implementation of plain packaging in EU Member States. This reception celebrated the Directive and the possibilities it has created for Member States to introduce plain packaging of tobacco products.

The event was organised by the Smoke Free Partnership and the Belgian Foundation Against Cancer and hosted by MEPs Gilles Pargneaux, Karl-Heinz Florenz and Benedek Jávor.

High Level Conference: Taxation and Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products: What next at EU level?

30 September- 1 October 2015. SFP organised this high level conference in the city of Leuven in Belgium. Bringing together tobacco tax experts, European Commission officials from DG TAXUD, DG SANTE and OLAF as well as MEPs and the tobacco control community, this conference provided an opportunity to discuss the different perspectives on tobacco taxation and illicit trade (Articles 6 and 15 of the FCTC).

SFP Breakfast Seminar: Smokefree polices in Europe: Are we there yet?

With a keynote speech by European Commission Deputy Director General for Health and Food Safety, Martin Seychell this breakfast seminar celebrated the launch of the updated SFP Smokefree Map and provided a platform to discuss whether smokefree policies in the EU are honouring national commitments made under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and the 2009 Council Recommendation on Smokefree Environments.
